When we stay in hotels while traveling, we rarely think about the behind-the-scenes safety measures that are in place. We assume that all the details have been taken care of and that the place we are staying has gone through various safety checks. In the past, that hasn't always been the case. The Winecoff Hotel fire in Atlanta, Georga back in the 1940s is just one example of a tragic fire because of the lack of precautions we take today. Thankfully, we have made a lot of progress since then. If you've ever been nervous about a fire while you're staying at a hotel, it may put your mind at ease to know that there are certain regulations that hotels must follow in order to be operational. Today we'll talk about a few of those regarding fire safety.
According to FDNY regulations, hotels are required to follow certain standards of fire safety before they are issued a Certificate of Occupancy. Hotels must have certain items treated with fire retardants, or these items need to be inherently flame resistant. Objects that fall into this category would be drapes, curtains, carpets, upholstered furniture, holiday decorations, and any combustible materials. This ensures that. if there is a fire, while these items may burn, they will not contribute to the spread of fire.
Hotels also have smoke detectors in each room, so if there's a fire anywhere in the building, your room will be alerted. Additionally, hotels are built according to fireproofing codes at the structural level, which includes firewalls between the rooms. Because of this element of the construction process, fires will not spread from room to room, and the building itself will not collapse due to fire. With these regulations and safety mechanisms in place, you can feel safe when you spend the night in a hotel.
