There's nothing like the conflict that arises in the workplace over the temperature of the building. Without a doubt, you'll have those that think the air conditioning is too cold in the summer and the heat is too low in the winter. With that being said, employees often compensate by wearing extra clothes when there's too much A/C or by bringing in their own space heaters in when it's cold outside. However, heating equipment is one of the largest factors when it comes to fires - and not just space heaters. This also involves standard heating equipment. Today we are going to discuss ways you can keep your office space safe from fires due to heating equipment, especially during the winter months.
First, any items that are flammable should be kept at least 3 feet away from heating equipment. This would include space heaters, furnaces, etc. It would be a good idea to also make sure there is nothing blocking the heating ducts as well.
Next, any heating equipment should be installed and maintained by a professional. This ensures that everything is performed up to the codes that are required by the FDNY and the Building Department.
All of the heating equipment should be inspected and cleaned every season, especially when the heat is being turned on again for the first time, after being off all summer long. This also should include new air filters as well.
Portable and space heaters need to be turned off when everyone leaves for the day. Be sure to have a system in place where you can make sure that they are switched off and unplugged before the office is closed for the evening.
All smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors should be properly installed and tested each month. The carbon monoxide detectors are especially important in the winter months, as this gas can be generated through fuel-burning equipment and is odorless.
Be sure that your flameproofing requirements are up to date. If a fire should break out, items that are flameproofed (which include decorative objects and fabrics such as carpets, upholstery, curtains, drapes, greenery, hangings, etc) will not contribute to the spread and severity of a fire and are non-combustible. This allows for valuable evacuation time as well as time for the fire department to arrive.
Following these safety tips during the winter can greatly aid in keeping your business location safe when the heat goes on this season. They are simple tips but pay off in great dividends in terms of fire prevention.
